Learning Forward's Virtual Coaches Academy Now Accepting individuals and small teams


Prepare your coaches to accelerate recovery and reinvention with the virtual Learning Forward Coaches Academy


Learning Forward’s signature coaching program, Coaches Academy, is now being offered virtually for open enrollment. This 12-session program, led by expert coaches Heather Clifton and Andy Mendelsberg, offers an opportunity for campus and district instructional coaches, coach advocates, and those who support coaches to deepen their understanding and application of critical coaching skills for supporting teachers’ individual and team learning.


In this virtual Coaches Academy, participants will engage in 12 virtual learning sessions featuring instruction and practice opportunities designed to enhance the effectiveness of their coaching conversations as well as professional learning design and facilitation skills. Asynchronous networking opportunities will be hosted on Learning Forward’s Brightspace platform. Both new and experienced coaches will benefit from this deep dive into instructional coaching. Participants will:

  • Explore a coaching framework grounded in the Standards for Professional Learning and the use of data;
  • Apply a coaching theory of change that develops teachers’ instructional effectiveness and increases student learning;
  • Assess their own strengths and opportunities for growth based on the characteristics of effective coaches;
  • Describe the impact of coaches’ work and conditions that support coaching effectiveness;
  • Explore the functions, responsibilities, knowledge, skills, and challenges associated with the essential roles of coaches;
  • Develop partnership agreements with principals and teachers;
  • Deepen their presentation and facilitation skills for work with individuals and teams of teachers;
  • Acquire and apply essential communication skills to support strong coaching relationships.

  • Coaching Matters, 2nd ed., by Joellen Killion and Heather Clifton (Learning Forward, 2020)

Course facilitators

Heather Clifton is a senior consultant for Learning Forward. As a professional learning consultant, she offers services to schools, districts, municipal agencies and non-profit organizations in various aspects of professional development and organizational reform. In addition, she provides executive coaching to school principals and assistant principals. Heather assisted in the development of the training modules for the Learning Forward Coaches Academy and has supported leadership development for instructional coaches and principals for more than a decade. She has facilitated the work of district executive leadership teams and school leadership teams. Her professional experience in schools and districts included positions as a teacher, an elementary school principal, and central office curriculum and staff development specialist. She is a co-author of Coaching Matters.

Andy Mendelsberg served Denver Public Schools as a principal, assistant principal, and school curriculum director for over 25 years. He currently coaches veteran and novice principals and assistant principals on their leadership competencies, strategy development, and team building. As a senior consultant for Learning Forward, Andy facilitates mentor cohorts and is a lead facilitator for national cohorts of Coaches Academy.
